First published in hardcover in 1987 by Orchard Books and in paperback in 1990 by Avon Camelot, this is the story of Julia Applebee, sent by her missionary parents to live with relatives in rural New York state in the year 1887. At first it is not a happy experience, and when Julia falls and breaks her leg, she is in despair, but slowly things begin to change. As her injury heals, she also mends fences with her cousins.
